Broccoli belongs to the cruciferous family of vegetables, together with cabbage, watercress, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and others. Cruciferous veggies belong in an elite category all their own; due to their high sulforaphane content. Sulforaphanes possess potent anticarcinogenic properties that help protect us from all kinds of diseases that are caused by oxidative stress. What’s incredible about this innocuous-looking plant is that it has the ability to stop cancer in its tracks at various phases; from tumor initiation, to promotion and progression. In other words, it helps prevent cancers before they show up, but also has the ability to suppress growth of new cancer cells and metastasis in cases where initiation has already begun.
Short of eating it raw, steamed broccoli is one of the healthiest ways to eat this nutrient dense vegetable. For most of us, scarfing down a giant head of broccoli does NOT sound like a good time. I’ve created this super quick and delicious broccoli recipe to help convert you. Cognitive enhancing coconut oil and Lebanese Aleppo pepper team up with broccoli to make this combination a superfoods superTHREAT!!! Aleppo is the region of Lebanon from which this pepper originates. It happens to be one of my all time favorite spices; spicy with a slight tang. The capsaicin found in Aleppo pepper (and other red colored peppers) is known for its anti-cancer and pain relief properties. You can get it at most Middle Eastern stores or specialty spice shops.
Enjoy this delicious ‘smart snack’ on its own, or combine it with other components to make a meal of it (it’s especially good with hummus)!
